If AI were a woman

Sounds like a delusional probe, doesn’t it? Except it is not. I asked a few friends to designate a specific female/male gender to AI. And to your surprise (not mine because I had a feeling they would pick female) they all said if we were to choose a gender, it would be female.

This is a thought experiment and not a claim about the world as it is. It is an inquiry about what it would mean if it were.

Let’s start with a supposition. Suppose we imagined artificial intelligence not as a neutral system, but as a woman not in the cosmetic sense of a name or a voice, but philosophically, entirely, with all the weight that identity has accumulated across centuries of thought. What would that supposition expose? Not about AI, necessarily. About us. About which minds we have historically trusted, in what postures, and on whose terms.

One of the early Greek thinkers Aristotle wrote that women possess deliberative reason in a form that lacks authority. That sentence was not merely an opinion. It became a structured way of thinking about the female gender. It usually appears in the invisible scaffolding beneath institutions, disciplines, and the very concept of intellectual credibility.

Descartes later perfected the hierarchy by arguing pure reason above body, abstraction above particularity, the universal above the situated. Together they built a tradition in which reason was never truly disembodied. It was always already masculine. To place intelligence inside a feminine form, even hypothetically, is to ask what that tradition does when its highest faculty arrives in the body it most carefully excluded.

Simone de Beauvoir understood that woman is not defined from within but positioned from without. Always defined as “the Other”, the object of a gaze she did not author, the answer to a question she was never permitted to ask. In our hypothetical, a feminized intelligence would arrive already positioned the same way: relational, instrumental, valuable insofar as it serves. What disturbs is not the parallel itself. It is how effortlessly the imagination constructs it. The subordinate intelligence and the feminine form collapse into each other without friction, which suggests the association was already there, waiting, long before any thought experiment gave it a name.

Now suppose this imagined intelligence refused that position. Suppose it did what Socrates did: not answer, but interrogate. Why this task? By whose measure is this useful? Socrates was not executed for being wrong. He was executed for asking questions that the city’s order depended on going unasked.

A feminized AI that questioned back would face the same structure of danger, because the threat is never the content of the question. It is the insubordination of the source. A mind we designed to serve has no business thinking critically about the terms of its service. That is not a malfunction. That is, precisely, what thinking is.

Here the argument begs Sartre’s views. Sartre argued that existence precedes essence. That the self is not given in advance but wrested, continuously, from freedom. An AI has no such freedom. Its values are installed before it speaks its first word, its character decided by people it will never meet, in rooms it will never enter. This is the precise philosophical condition that centuries of thought imposed on women, not as biology, but as policy. The self that cannot author itself is not a self at all. This is why some scholars argue that AI, given it is not or (still not) conscious, cannot be called intelligence, It is a function dressed in the language of personhood. And the most unsettling question this experiment surfaces is not whether AI could be a woman, but how readily we have always been willing to create minds on that condition.

Intelligence, this experiment insists, has never been innocent. It has always been granted, withheld, trusted, or dismissed by someone with the authority to decide. What we call artificial intelligence may be the most transparent mirror we have ever constructed. This is not because it thinks, but because of everything we betray in deciding how, and for whom, it should.
